The inland fishes, especially those inhabiting the rivers and streams of Western Ghats, comprise a vivid spectrum of Ichthyofauna offering challenging avenues of taxonomical ecomorphological and biological pursuits .Although many courses have been introduced in some of the fisheries institutions in Kerala none of them seem to have given much importance in the study of Inland fishes of Kerala. This clearly felt need led to the establishment of department of life science in the inland district of Pathanamthitta. Initially a Post graduate programme was started incorporating such relevant studies in fisheries as systematics, Aquatic Ecology, Fishery Technology, Fishery economics, Extension and Management, Finfish culture, shell fish culture, ornamental fisheries, Pathology in Aquaculture, Fish genetics and Immunology. The course gives adequate consideration for academic, employment and research aspects. The curriculum is designed in such a way as to enable students to acquire enough know-how to start self-employment programmes in the field of Fishery Science. With regard to the academic side the curriculum has incorporated appropriate topics considering the latest global demands especially in food processing and quality control as well as maintaining disease-resistant strains. This gives much opportunity for students to take up a Teaching profession in Colleges
